Responsibility at Skulk

Useful AI.
Room for people.

Skulk is part of Fox by the Lake. Our proposed approach is to use AI where it helps people do useful work, with clear limits and meaningful human oversight.

01 Define the purpose

People review

Clear purpose. Meaningful oversight.
The ability to challenge and pause.

Principles for review, not a live product interface.

01 / People & wellbeing

People stay central.

Better tools should leave room for human judgement, learning and connection.

Support better work

We want to reduce unnecessary administration and make information easier to use. Time saved should create room for learning, judgement and more manageable workloads. It is not evidence of a wellbeing outcome.

Keep decisions accountable

Our approach will require meaningful human oversight where decisions could significantly affect rights, employment, health, safety or finances. People need the information, time and authority to challenge an automated recommendation.

Keep wellbeing boundaries clear

Our AI tools will not be presented as substitutes for qualified mental-health care, crisis support or human relationships. Services intended for children or vulnerable adults will need additional safeguards and specialist review before deployment.

02 / Thoughtful by design

Clear limits. Considered choices.

What we choose to build matters. So does knowing when to use less technology.

Purpose before automation

We will assess whether AI is necessary and whether a simpler solution would meet the need. Where AI is appropriate, we will consider repeated processing, unnecessary generation and boundaries on automated tasks.

Privacy before connection

We will define the information a service needs, who can access it, retention and deletion arrangements, and assess supplier data handling before connecting sensitive information to an AI system. Private wellbeing conversations will not be used to score employees or target advertising.

Evidence before claims

We will distinguish plans from completed work and estimates from measurements. We will not describe an AI interaction as impact-free, or an environmental donation as proof that its resource use has been cancelled out.

03 / Our approach to AI safety

Test. Review. Be prepared to pause.

We will test relevant failure modes before deployment and review systems after significant changes. For agents connected to business systems, we will define permissions, action limits, approval requirements and a practical way to pause operation. Availability and controls depend on the product and configuration; they must be checked for the actual service before use.

Progress includes
knowing when to pause.

Permissions. Action limits. Approval requirements.

Controls must be checked for the actual service.
Part of Fox by the Lake

One family. Distinct responsibilities.

One shared purpose. A practical role for Skulk.

Fox by the Lake sets out the wider commitments to people, the planet and responsible AI. Skulk is the product platform: websites, forms, bookings, learning and AI tools. This page explains the principles we intend to bring to that work. It is not a claim that every safeguard is already operating in every product.
